Indigenous foods and spices, culturally-inspired cooking and casual outdoor eateries have all contributed to the explosion of Arizona's popularity among UK travellers looking for a bite to eat. Jamie Oliver's American Road Trip showcases the Navajo Native American Nation in the north of the state in the episode on 6th October.

With strong ties to Native American roots, specialties celebrate distinctive spices and native foods. The most popular native food is fry bread - flat disks of deep-fried dough. This is delicious smothered with honey. Fry bread becomes a Navajo taco when topped with beans, meat, salad and cheese. Fry bread can be found year round at the east entrance of the Grand Canyon National Park.

The nation's oldest Mexican restaurant in continuous operation by the same family is located in Tucson. Since 1922, locals and visitors alike have flocked to El Charro Café for Sonoran-style dishes and their sun-dried carne seca.

For a something a little more retro, Flagstaff has an eclectic collection of diners to choose from found along the well travelled Route 66.

Both chic sushi in a cowboy atmosphere and traditional barbeque bites with prickly pear flair can be found in Phoenix and Scottsdale - neighbouring cities, with a spectacular mountain backdrop, that boast one of the highest concentrations of internationally recognized chefs.

Arizona brings much to the table. From chic resort dining rooms and fry bread, to cowboy steaks, foie gras and sushi, Arizona is bound to please every palate, no matter how picky.
